On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, Irene Litvan, M.D., a neurologist specializing in movement disorders, dementia, and neuroepidemiology, will discuss ways to improve quality of life for persons diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and related diseases during a CurePSP Ask the Doctor webinar. The free, one-hour webinar begins at 1:00 p.m. Eastern (10:00 a.m. Pacific).
While there are no cures for PSP, corticobasal degeneration (CBD), or multiple system atrophy (MSA), there are nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies that can improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers. During this talk, Dr. Litvan will mention some options and will answer questions submitted during registration. However, she will not respond to specific therapies for an individual.
Questions may be submitted prior to the start of the event either through the registration link or by sending an email to info@curepsp.org.
Watch the recorded webinar below.
About Dr. Irene Litvan
Dr. Litvan is the Tasch Endowed Professor of Neurology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and Director of the Parkinson Disease Movement Disorder Center of Excellence at UCSD. One of her major research goals is to identify symptomatic and biological therapies that can improve the quality of life of patients with neurodegenerative disorders presenting with parkinsonism and/or dementia. To be able to study patients accurately, she has focused her research in improving or developing neuropathologic and afterwards clinical diagnostic criteria that would allow identifying these patients more accurately and finding robust diagnostic and outcome biomarkers.
For more than 30 years, she has led or participated in several multicenter studies and international task forces to develop clinical and neuropathologic diagnostic criteria for all parkinsonian and/or dementia neurodegenerative disorders including PSP and CBD. She received the National Institutes of Health merit award and recently both the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Movement Disorder Research Award and Uruguayan National Academy of Medicine entrance.
Dr. Litvan has published more than 350 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and is the senior editor of four books, including the first one on PSP. Since her arrival to UCSD, the Center has become a Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, Research Center of Excellence in Lewy Body Dementia and CurePSP Center of Care. These designations recognize top medical institutions featuring comprehensive care teams that meet patient needs and provide access to clinical studies and experimental therapies while educating healthcare professionals and the community.
